Emotions are responses that the brain gives instantaneously. We can’t choose what emotions we feel at that moment. All emotions that humans feel are natural, but emotions can be destructive if they are expressed in an inappropriate way. For example, like us humans, it is normal and not wrong to feel sad when the people they love in their lives feel sad.
However, when these humans cannot control their emotions well, they will become depressed because they are too late in sadness. Here are some ways that can teach students to regulate their inner emotions:
- Choose a Situation
When students are in a situation that has the potential to trigger unwanted emotions, teach them to get out of that situation. Therefore, beforehand you have to teach them to be able to read the situation and understand themselves.
By having the ability to understand the situation and know themselves well, they can know what situations can make them angry, sad, or they will feel fine if they are in a conflicted situation.
- Changing the Situation
If the emotions are released too much, it will cause harm. For example, when students expect too much to get perfect grades when they do not study optimally and still do not understand the learning material well, the results can be seen if the student’s learning outcomes cannot be maximized and make them disappointed.
Therefore, by teaching students to regulate emotions, they will learn from their mistakes and find solutions to the problems they have. Not choosing to give up and not wanting to fight back.
- Diverting the Focus of Attention
Who doesn’t often experience overthinking and insecure when they see someone who has more abilities above us. These feelings and emotions are normal. Instead of constantly feeling inferior because you feel inadequate and don’t look great, you can teach your students to pay attention to someone who has the same abilities as those who are struggling to get maximum learning results.
If it is associated with someone who is in the gym, then there are some people who are experienced and have a healthy and ideal body shape. So on this occasion someone who is just learning can go to a coach to learn, rather than reflect on the strengths of others.
- Change Feedback
If students fail to get the best results, they can be sad but don’t give up. If all the efforts that have been made have ended in failure, then you do not need to avoid, shift focus, and let the emotions out.
You can change the response that you haven’t had the time to succeed. There is the right time and the right conditions for students to succeed. Give you time to rest, with that time students can gather inner strength and rearrange plans that will be passed the next day.
- Practice Mindfulness
Mindfulness is a treatment in which a person is able to focus on his surroundings and the emotions he is feeling. One may not be able to change the situation, but one can control one’s emotions.
By practicing mindfulness, students can learn to accept experiences and situations that are happening. In addition, students can also change the heart and feelings that were initially angry to be calmer and the emotions that are ignited become decreased. Practicing mindfulness can also train focus and reduce thoughts that distract them.
As for the ways that students can do after practicing regulating emotions, they can also learn to identify problems or reasons why these emotions can arise. For example, like a messy routine because of getting up late, the next day students can improve their sleeping hours so that tomorrow’s routine can run smoothly.
In addition, students can also practice positive thinking so that they can avoid suspicion and free themselves from thoughts that constantly interfere with their concentration. Students can also learn to be grateful for the circumstances and situations they go through, because with gratitude we will learn to appreciate the time that has passed and bad situations will be happy because there is no anxiety forever.
This is an explanation of how to regulate emotions in students that you can apply in class. By applying these methods, it is hoped that students will be able to control their emotions well. Although controlling emotions is not an easy job, but if done seriously, controlling these emotions will become easier to do.
