Some people in this world need certain means to achieve health. For example, if a person is sick and there are wounds on his body then he can go to see a doctor to treat his wounds. But what about those with invisible illnesses such as mental health disorders? According to the National Institute of Mental Health, more than a quarter of adults in the United States experience depression, anxiety, or other mental disorders in any given year. Meanwhile, according to WHO data (World Health Organization) in 2019, there were 264 million people experiencing depression, 45 million people suffering from bipolar disorder, 50 million people experiencing dementia, and 20 million people experiencing schizophrenia. And according to the 2013 Basic Health Research Data, the prevalence of severe mental disorders in Indonesia reached 1.7 per mile. Based on the 2013 Basic Health Research data, the prevalence of severe mental disorders in Indonesia reached 1.7 per mile. This shows that there are still many people who need special care to cope with their mental health problems.
In psychology, one way that can be done is by doing psychotherapy. But there are so many types of psychotherapy in psychology. So this time we will discuss one type of psychotherapy in psychology, namely behavioral psychotherapy.
Gerald Corey explains that behavioral therapy is approaches to counseling and psychotherapy related to changing behavior. The approaches, techniques, and procedures taken are rooted in various theories about learning. Behavioral therapy is one of the techniques used in resolving behavior caused by internal impulses and urges to meet the needs of life, which is carried out through the learning process so that they can act and behave more effectively, then be able to respond to situations and problems in a more effective way. more effective and efficient. This activity is known as learning. For the purpose of behavior psychotherapy itself in general is to create a new atmosphere for each learning process.
The basic theory that exists in humans is that every human behavior is studied, including maladaptive behavior. If the behavior is neurotic behavior learned, then it can be unlearned (erased from memory) and good and effective behavior can be obtained. The purpose of behavior counseling itself is to help counselees eliminate old responses or behaviors that damage themselves by learning better and healthier ones.
By knowing more about behavioral psychotherapy, it is hoped that readers can take a valuable lesson that mental health is no less important than physical health. Therefore, both physical and mental health need to be maintained properly so as to obtain a balanced and good quality of life.
